New view

If you haven't noticed yet, Lincoln is now entirely lit up in Google Maps Streetview. Until last week, the coverage in Lincoln was strictly partial, but it looks like every nook and cranny has been driven now. Moreover, the photos for those areas that were previously available around town appear to me to have been overwritten with these newer shots. Judging from the deck-building project's progression in my back yard, I think my neighborhood must have been driven in late June or July.

In combination with Bing Maps bird's eye view and the Lancaster County Assessor's public website, a police officer planning follow-up, a special event, or something like the service of a search warrant can now get the lay of the land, the views from the street, and a nice photo of the house. Heck, you can do it with my smartphone, for that matter. Google Maps Mobile and Streetview work particularly well.

Every nook, not not every cranny. My street in Bicentennial Estates still isn't done. :(

7:38,

Well I'll be darned, there are indeed a few crannies that aren't done in Bicentennial Estates and Autumn Woods, and a couple other slivers at the north edge. Still, it's at 90%+ now, a huge jump from a couple weeks ago, when I'd estimate that no more than a quarter of Lincoln's streets were covered.

Wouldn't you know it? When I punched in my address it showed my garage door open and I was working on my motorcycle in the driveway. At least I had on a clean shirt that day.

Doesn't the argument cut both ways? These could also be utilized as tools for buglars looking for high-reward, low-risk targets (i.e. rural mcmansions).

Gun Nut:

If you have some problem with the photo of your house on the County Assessor's site, let them know. They will probably send someone out to retake it. My home's original photo was taken while the sun was quite bright, but shadows from the trees and the exposure settings made the house look black. You couldn't even tell if it was brick or siding. I offered to send in my own photo, but they declined and sent someone out to retake it.

Trevor:

I don't think the detail of the arial photos would show enough to let a potential burglar know of my three big dogs or my "Protected by Smith & Wesson" sign. Bring 'em on!
