Business robberies

Two crimes that are especially low in Lincoln are robbery and auto theft. I’ve blogged before about the unusually small number of stick-ups we have, for a City of 252,000. While the overall robbery rate is very low, the number of business robberies is even lower.

The first business robbery of the 2010 was on January 6, when a Super C convenience store was held up. The frustrated robber got no loot at all. We almost made it through the first month with a single business robbery, but during the wee hours on January 31st, we had our second business robbery of the year, at a Kwik Shop convenience store. The criminal committed a Class II Felony, punishable by up to fifty years in prison, that netted somewhere around $20—a pretty typical score in a convenience store robbery.

In 2009, there were a total of 42 robberies of businesses in Lincoln. By comparison, our big brother a few miles to the northeast experienced 205 robberies of businesses in 2009.

"The first business robbery of the 2009 was on January 6"...

I believe you might have meant to say "2010", Chief.

Tougher to update your internal calendar now that you use an ATM card instead of writing checks?

Thanks, Herb. And good point about writing checks--I guess that really was the way you conditioned yourself to the new year!

Chief,

If that comment about the high number of robberies your "big brother to the northeast" incurs was made to make us Omahans feel bad it did not work. We don't mind dealing with some "mean streets" because it makes us tough.

Anytime we want we could march on the Star City and enslave the entire population. Bring me the co-eds!

Chief,

The clearance rate for 2009 Part I violent crimes, which includes robbery, was 56.6%. That is 3.6% higher than the previous year. Single out robberies alone, we cleared 40% in 2009, compared to 32.3% in 2008.

In this case, less is more.

Go Yankees.

Chief,

Convenience stores: There are roughly the same number of U-Stops and Kwik Shops in Lincoln (I think one more U-Stop). How many of 2009's convenience store business robberies were at the respective franchises?

Good police presence deters the robberies here in Lincoln. In my opinion.

The only time I got robbed last year was when I paid my cable bill!

Chief-We've already had our first homicide. We had 26 last year. Would have had more but apparently when you look down the side of the slide instead of using the sights your ability to aim is compromised.

Chief,

Regarding HIR B0-011393, well, I don't even need to ask, do I? I think the Magic 8-ball already answered my usual questions.

No, you don't need to ask!
