To blog, or not to blog

My apologies for neglecting the Chief's Corner last week. I was out of town at a meeting of the geospatial technology working group of the National Institue of Justice, and just didn't have much time To do much more than try to keep up with the most pressing email and messages.

Many readers have probably heard that the Mayor announced on Friday that he is changing my role in his administration from police chief to public safety director. In this capacity, I will be assuming responsibility for police, fire & rescue, and the 911 center. This is going to be a huge change for me, and the question looms as to whether I will be able to keep up with this off-duty hobby of blogging.

I do this because I think it creates a little transparency in my work, and helps people understand what's going on in my head--beside being a little fun, from time to time. That's probably a good thing, but it's also another draw on my limited time. The Chief's Corner competes primarily with my early morning workouts, and if I am forced to choose, I'm going with the bike and the gym.

For now, though, I will try to keep on blogging a bit and see how this works out. Looks like I will need a new name, and a new photo.

Hi Chief,

This blog has become part of my morning routine. One of the first 3 web sites I look at every day. I'll really miss it, but I understand that with new responsibilities, comes change.
And, congratulations on the new gig!

Congrats on the new gig Chief. Hats off to the Mayor for selecting the right man for the job, your track record is impressive. Any thoughts of public office after the public safety job?

Might as well keep it Chief's Corner. Nothing wrong with that. What ever your new title is, chief will always stick with you anyway. Besides, no sense in me having to have another place to go in the morning when I get up. Keep it up and perhaps even have some guest bloggers if the time you have is an issue. Good Luck with the new job!

Well, I haven't read your info for a number of months, but can't sleep here at 5 AM with lightening and thunder, so decided to surf the net. You certantly have a knack of writing, maybe give up police work all together and work on becooming a full time author, and give the bad guys a break here in Lincoln. Nada-Nada a mover and nada a shaker.

same here.............. its the first thing I go to every morning!!
and what a good way to help keep us all informed on the inner workings of ANY of our public officials!! My most hearty congratulations on the new position but I DO still hope we hear from you occassionally. It will also help us understand your new job and how it affects all of the citizenry!! congratulations again and 'move on'

I certainly hope you can keep up the blogging. A few months ago we lost The Bullsheet, another great blog from the Larimer, CO sheriff's office. I love these things, as have family in law enforcement. Not in Lincoln, but I live here, after all!

Now's a better time than ever to keep blogging. This is going to get interesting with the Police Chief now in charge of 911, fighting criminals and fires.

Congrats, Chief. But PLEASE keep the blog, if at all possible. It's a huge part of my morning routine; not sure I could function anymore without it!!!!

Chief,
Congratulations. Please keep the blog. While change is good it is also a little unsettling and with your blog you could ease some of the uncertainity that will surely come with this change in administration for the City and the departments. Many employees throughout the City will have to face changes that they will question and this would be a way to let them know and us know what is in your head.
There are alot of unanswered questions......concerns......like one more management salary and what will be cut since the Council doesn't think property taxes should be raised. While this could be a good move in the long run to consolidate some support functions in the short term how will it be paid for without cutting any positions in the departments. Maybe you are not planning on backfilling Peschong and Huff's positions which would work since other areas throughout the City are doing more than one job since the Mayor has already cut numerous positions and the same work has to be done.
Concerned Citizen willing to pay to keep Lincoln a beautiful City.

OOPS, forgot to use my sig. Nada! NOT for posting, just a comment. Sometime within the past year or so, there was an idea floated to require all new houses built to have a sprinkler system. The Realtors and home builders were SO against this, but I thought it a good idea--if it only saved one personit would pay. Now I have just returned from the fire at LPS DO and saw that building does not have a sprinkler system What a shame with all of the projects and records that went up in flames tonight. Thanks for letting me vent anomously (sp)?

The local media will have to actually do some work on slow news days, if they don't have this blog to use for low-effort story ideas.

guess you could call it Casady's Corner... hope it works out for you to keep blogging with your new perspective.

Chief,

Thanks for creating the blog it gives good insite into your job duties and thinking that can't be found anywere else. Many times the only contact citizens have with the police is when something bad happens. Your blog allows the avarge citizen a glimps into your world and thinking and shows a "human" element of police work.

Congrats Chief! Please keep blogging! It is a refreshing insite into police work not scripted for a one hour show!
