Vandalism trend

I was asked to supply some trend data on vandalism earlier this month, and quickly assembled a spreadsheet.  I was a little surprised myself at the results.

Now that we have the anti-graffiti law in Lincoln, we just get slashed tires and BB'd windows.

This is really going to disappoint the folks who constantly tell me that everything is getting worse.

Any stats on the 15-25 yo male population for your spreadsheet?

I consider littering a form of vandalism. It is very frustrating to see people driving through your neighborhood and throwing fast food wrappers etc and even worse burning cigarette butts out the window.

maybe people have grown used to it, and don't report it

I knowe people who are habitual vandalists, and they get a slap on the wrist every time. Same with thefts, which usually result in vandalism in the process.

The per 1000 is going down though.

Care to share the average penalty these people recieved for the vandalisms?

I think that the average citizen, rightly or not, might perceive that crime rates in Lincoln have gone up, and that the reported vs actual crime rates for crimes like assault, rape, residential burglary, street and residential robbery, and vandalism are becoming further apart. They might feel that vandalism is less and less worth reporting all the time. When they feel that they are surrounded by bigger things, they might be less likely to report the little things. Actual vs reported rates, because not every crime rate can be taken at face value.

Littering is not vandalism. Littering is littering.

Having been a victim of vandalism, I think it would be great if we could put the ones who get caught to work doing menial tasks for the city (painting curbs and fire hydrants, painting over graffiti, picking up litter, etc.) at minimum wage. Get a work crew going like good ol' Sheriff Joe in Arizona. Just imagine what the vandalism stats might look like if there was some REAL punishment awaiting those who get caught. *GASP* WORK?!! Oh noes!!!

Then, all of the wages they earn would go to their victims as restitution for damages. My wife's rear windshield alone would have kept a kid working for about 60 hours, and that's before taxes...that is, of course, had the police been able to link the slimeballs that were arrested to my specific case.

FYI, not bashing the police in that last line, they have to work with the evidence...and while the police and I 'know' who was responsible, proving it is another matter.

Grundle King, I agree with you 100 percent. I wish the whole U.S.A. prison system would get like Sheriff Joe, but oh my goodness, the poor prisoners! Some people would think the prisoners' rights are being violated! Hey, if Charles Barkley can serve his (reduced) time at Tent City, anyone can serve their time in a Tent City!!

Hay Chief Tom, I am reporting absent from the blog again today. All is going well. I missed getting T-Boned on Salt Valley and 14th street Monday past. The red light runner was going about 50 MPH and I had solid green for five sec (I count to two prior to go on green) then stopped half through my turn, the passangers thought I was nuts and then saw the real nut blow past us only to park in the stadium parking lot. Note to Bo: put some drivers instruction into the play book! Can you send a note on to traffic as to this area, I am the 2nd driver in two weeks this has happened to. Thanks.(three days 35 hours, OT rest of week)

@Jim J

It quite possibly was Bo. I've seen him drive.

We've had our American Flag stolen, and our landscape lights by the side walk ripped out twice. I would like to catch who did it, and make them work to pay for replacements.
