Whoa, $43 to go from 16th & F to Capitol Beach? That's less than four miles by quickest route. Did they hit a waypoint in Beatrice or is Crapitol Crab taxi monopoly (thanks a lot city council) charging 10 bucks a mile these days?
They should start requiring ID to ride in taxi's.. that would end this problem. Or atleast remedy only having a generic description of suspects
If it costs $43.00 to take a cab from 16th & F to Capital Beach I think they are looking for the wrong crook.
That's ridiculous! You could probably take a cab all the way from JFK to the Upper West Side (Manhattan) for roughly that fare.
Mapquest says 3.82 miles. $11.25 per mile sounds a little excessive. What does that Cab Company say? I'm with ARRRRG!!!! on this one.

You can rent a car for a whole day for $3 more. I think you can stop looking for the suspects and arrest the cab driver!
The reason is that even though when you look in the phone book for a cab in Lincoln, there are several listed. What most don't know is that they are owned by the same company. A cabby monopoly. There is no other choice if you want a cab.
Maybe the riders are from a city that doesn't have a rip-off cab monopoly, and assumed they could ride 4 miles for 10 bucks or less.
Journal-star writers seem to visit this blog and get story ideas. I'd like to see one of them write an article detailing how Lincoln has a one-company taxicab monopoly, and compare their rates to other cities. make it real snarky, too. Ask the owners how they live with charging what they charge. Do some man-on-the-street interviews and ask riders what they think of the rates.
Maybe, being laid off was a good thing; I think I've found a job that will pay even more!
I drove a cab. I quit the day I learned that they leave welfare voucher fares to wait, and dispatch the paying cash fares first.
Also, they must have had a drive around to get such a high amount.
The cab company has all those nice Christian bible verses on the cabs. They should practice what they preach!
and you wonder why people dont use the cab system here and just drive home after drinking!!!!!
not only does it take 3 hrs to get a cab after midnight but 43 bucks for that distance???? wow!!!
I'll contact the JS to encourage them to do a story on this Cab Co. I've got a story that'll blow you away and give them the publicity they deserve.
I in no means seek to defend a cab company that functionally has a monopoly nor do I condone such policies as what 12:37 PM reports, that being said part of it is the nature of Lincoln being a city that has limited demand for cabs, as an econ student it's really simple to see that if Lincoln had more demand this wouldn't be possible, further from having lived in cities that do use cabs often I can say that part of it is the riders own stupidity for not paying A. closer attention to the meter and B. closer attention to the route that they were following, it's a shame that they got ripped off, but there also needs to be a certain sense of person responsibility.
The sad thing is this...
1. They probably could have walked to their destination in the time they probably waited for a cab;
2. They would have saved themselves $11; and
3. They could have stuck it to the cab company the legal way.
My calculations say that the fare should have been no more than $13.00. They would still have been a couple bucks short but unless the passengers were total jerks MOST cabbies would have worked something out. A passenger can request an estimate from a dispatcher on the phone when ordering the cab. If that has been done before the ride they should honor that rate.

$1.80 for the first 1/7 mile, 25 cents for each additional 1/7-mile.
According to Google this drive is 3.7 miles and should have a rate of 8.05.

Regarding vandalism B0-080411 et al. I instantly thought of this individual. It looks like he's got a hefty court date for arraignment on another set of charges coming up next month, so maybe he flipped a little over pending big bail anticipation. Anyway, he's done this very thing before.
Chief--on another note, congrats on getting the attempted rapist/burglar off the streets so quickly. The dynamic duo, Hruza & Ripley struck again. Those two do good work together.

Chief, please tell me you followed up on this and had them contact the cab company on their rates? This seems like the cabbie TRIED to rip off some drunk kids and then called the police when it didn't work. You have the evidence against the cabbie, he made the report. This is like a guy calling the cops because he had his bag of weed stolen from him. Give me a break, this was a $10 cab ride, tops.
i will presume there is no followup on the over charging???? obviously the crime isnt worth pressing??? are you willing to comment? thanks

I have no idea why the fare was so high. Maybe the taxi had to wait quite a while, maybe there is an add-on for extra passengers, maybe there is a surcharge for after 3:00 AM. If it was a crime to charge an unreasonably high price for a product or service, we'd be arresting a lot of baristas, don't you think? Caveat emptor.
