Hangover

The 10-story Terminal Building is a Lincoln landmark in the heart of downtown at 10th & O Streets. Built in 1916, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the scene, Saturday evening, of a rather unusual police call for service.

Passers by noticed a man climbing on the radio tower on the roof. Witnesses told the officers that the subject had shinnied up an electrical conduit until he reached the fire escape on the south side of the building. He climbed to the roof, where he scaled the rather impressive guyed radio tower. By the time the officers arrived on the roof, the defendant had descended from the tower. He told the officers that he had watched the sunset from his perch, and that it “looked cool up there.”

The 19 year-old sophomore business major with more courage than sense had been enjoying himself quite a bit on this home football game Saturday. He tested .179%, and was jailed for both trespassing and minor in possession of alcohol.

He must be a pretty regular drinker, if he tested that high, but was still able to climb up and down that tower.

Zoom in real close on the top of the tower and guess what you see.

By the way, how many total officer-hours (for want of a better term) did this Donkey Kong drunk burn up during the incident?

This story reminded me of what happened to two fellow coworkers in the early 1970's. Two of the guys I worked with were at the local watering hole after work having a few beers. A new water tower had been built recently and these two grown ups (late 20's at the time) thought they should climb to the top of the tower and spray paint their names on it. So full of beer and courage they proceed to the top of the tower. It was colder than billy hell that night and Gerald (name changed to protect his identity) had sobered up enough to be scared by this time. He couldn't make the trip back down. His partner was able to get back to the ground safely and he called the fire department. They both made it back to terra firma safely but everyone in the small town knew about their adventure the next day.

I've been up working on antenna's on the roof of the 1st National Bank building, and the water tower out near the Surplus Center, and I did it without any kind of safety harness or net. However, I did it completely sober and can't imagine doing it drunk (though it might have been less scary and more fun). To each his own, I guess.

Perhaps he's into urban exploration. While the intoxication side doesn't mesh, the rest of the story does. I bet he saw some pretty cool things from up there.
