Things have changed

I mentioned in a recent post that the City is in the process of acquiring a new set of aerial photos, since the last ones were taken back in the spring of 2010.  Things have changed in the past three years, and reasonably up-to-date imagery is helpful to many of our municipal operations, including public safety.

On the subject of change, here are three images of the same area of Lincoln, taken in 1941, 1964, and 2010.  We'll see who the first reader is who can correctly identify this area, and the most prominent feature visible in 1964, but missing in 1941 and 2010. You can click on each for a slightly larger view.

The old drive in movie theater at 48th and Vine. Can't remember the name, though.

It is the area north east of 48th and R St. Since I was around in the 60s (or most of the 70s for that matter), I have no idea what the feature is that is missing. I can only assume it has something to do with Culler Jr. High just to its east.

The Star View!

I guess choosing a landmark would be the task. Yes, there's StarView and you can see Cool Crest, but don't forget the curvy white road on the west side tha went into the Buffalo Motel. Can;t quite tell if I can make out Ken Eddy's in this view.

Star View probably most prominent, but also gone is the Buffalo Motel.

172,

Don't forget Shakee's and the Drumstick.

Oh, and the original Miracle Mile Motors, since this was the Miracle Mile, Newt Copple Motors.

Though the road bed is still there in the form of a bike path, there are no longer any railroad tracks, nor a Dairy Queen (now a car lot). Ken Eddy's is somewhat south of the photo (right on the corner of 48th and O).

MoPac Railroad?

You missed my house by a block! I remember going to the Star View and Cool Crest when I was a kid... also the rumble of trains at night. Great memories!

I'm thinking O'Shea-Rogers used car lot was just south of the Buffalo Motel, and we might be looking at the north end of the Sleepy Hollow motel's parking lot at the lower edge just left of center.

I figured this out and I didn't even live here then (visited often). Loved the Starview, Cool Crest, Buffalo Motel, and Drumstick. Thanks for the memories of greener, wider spaces and a more laid-back pace of life. (Well, maybe not at the Drumstick. LOL)
