The University of Nebraska football team opened its season Saturday against Southern Mississippi. The temperature at kickoff hovered in the mid 90's, with nary a breeze. While the Cornhuskers rolled up over 600 yards in total offense, the fans were dropping left and right. Around 300 people were treated for various levels of heat stress, along with a host of other medical emergencies.
While a number of agencies and organizations such as the Red Cross and Star Care are involved in the provision of medical care at Memorial Stadium, Lincoln Fire & Rescue is the backbone and backup. It took a huge effort to deal with the flood of patients, and I am proud of the personnel who pulled together on one of the busiest days imaginable. And a hearty thanks to the surrounding fire districts who lent a hand when mutual aid was requested.
The police department had a huge day as well, with over 500 dispatched incidents. Any time the police and fire departments are busy, it all funnels through the Emergency Communications Center at some point, so our dispatchers were working furiously, too. All in all, a great team effort. No a bad football game, either.

Wait 'til they have another 6,000 seats in the statdium.
6:37,
Thanks for the correction. What was I thinking? Duh.
Seriously, LFR actually asked for help from a surrounding district? Didn’t think that was part of their culture. I remember back to an incident during the Airshow (Sept 2011) which surrounding districts were providing onsite coverage with crews and ambulances. A medical incident came up with a patient needing to be transported to a Hospital. One of the surrounding district crew and ambulance was caring for the patient and was ready to transport, when LFR demanded that they provide the transport, and o by the way they didn’t have an ambulance available yet so the patient would have to wait. After that little tiff this district decided they were not going to do any more Airshows.
Air shows are just terrible accidents waiting to happen and a waste of more government money.

Non-veteran, I assume.

Wrong, but I was a sailor. I don't see how that matters, though.
Even if it were battleships shelling each other on Oak Lake, I'd still think it was a waste of money.
We all die from something Steve. Just think if you eliminate all the things in life that are dangerous, fattening or immoral you might live to be 110. Then you could die from boredom LOL.

Airshows scare me to death. I won't attend any of them. I've even had nightmares about crashes at airshows, although I've never actually witnessed any.

That could never happen (dying from boredom) as long as the Director is still running this blog. :)
My doctor warned me about dangerous, fattening, and immoral things; he died 30-some years ago.
