Catching up

A nasty back spasm has laid me low, but also provided me with a little time to catch up on the news. This story (and this one a few weeks ago) always stirs the readers. And I noticed that Kevin is back in the news.

Without knowing anything else about Kevin, I might have thought he got a bit of a raw deal with 2-4 years for a $5 "request". With his background, however, I'd say he got off lightly. Seems a little late for an appeal to just now be coming to light, doesn't it?

Cops have a lot of back problems, partly due to the gear on the rear of the duty belt causing their lumbar spine to go more concave as they sit in the cruiser. This causes the vertebrae to change shape very slowly, over many years, to adapt to this unnatural curve. In their POVs, many cops use large amounts of lumbar support, which just reinforces that unnatural curve. End result, bulging discs and back pain.

Director,
I can identify with the back pain. In my younger years I was blessed/cursed with the ability to lift heavy objects that mere mortals could only dream about. I helped pay for college by working in a beef packing house lugging beef. I actually enjoyed this type of work. I discovered I wasn't Superman one day when I stepped in to a pothole while walking across the parking lot at work. I felt something go in my back. When I woke up the next day I couldn't get out of bed. Three days of excruciating pain passed before I could do more than crawl to the bathroom. I have only had two or three episodes that were that bad in the forty years since that incident but I always live with the fear in the back of my mind of another one.

I doubt many of us in your age range have gone through life without at least some back pain. Like Gun Nut, I never worried about lifting heavy objects until one day...

I had it bad for a few years and finally got a steroid shot in the spine that worked, and I (knock on wood) haven't had much problem since.

Hope yours gets better soon, Tom.
