Budding career

Last year, a frightening crime occurred on the MoPac recreational trail, near Riley Elementary School. The victim, out for a morning run on the trail, was attacked by an assailant who surprised her from behind. The 21-year old UNL student bravely fought off her attacker, while a bystander walking a dog watched without lifting a finger. After the assault, the victim, tears streaming down her face, had a few sharp words with the dog-walker, who told her he thought it was some kind of joke. It was no joke, it was an attempted rape, and her courage and strength were matched by her power of observation.

During the attack, the victim noted a neck tattoo on the suspect, and she provided us with the spelling. As she struggled with him, she also dislodged a lanyard that was around his neck. He snatched it back, but she had already noticed the Lincoln Northeast High School student ID attached. The School Resource Officer at Northeast that morning, Officer Jason Brownell, recognized the description, and within short order the assailant had been identified. Not surprisingly, he never showed up for class, but we found the 15 year old suspect later that evening and made the arrest.

Last week, another crime occurred along the MoPac Trail, this time in the 3800 block of X Steet. The victim and his wife were awakened around 11:20 by noises in the back of the house, and interrupted a burglary. The house backs up onto the same trail where last year's attempted sexual assault occurred, although it is a little less than a mile away.

Two teenage intruders were in the process of removing their TV and DVD player when the homeowner confronted them. The pair took off and the police were summoned. Officer Justin Roach spotted them a few blocks away, and the chase was on. Justin caught one of the burglars in the foot pursuit across yards and fences. The second suspect provided two of our canines, Beersie-Remo and Kony, with a nice workout, and their handlers, Officer John Clarke and Officer Tyler Dean, with a nice arrest.

That second suspect was the same youth who committed last year's attempted rape. He's 16 now. He still has the distinctive tattoo, and has added a little embellishment. This may help us identify him in the future, because unless something happens that changes his trajectory, he's going to be someone we get to know even better. He was a missing person at the time of the burglary. On September 29, he decided that house arrest wasn't for him, cut the electronic monitoring bracelet off his ankle, and became a missing person. Now he has been found. Here are his arrests by the Lincoln Police Department, in reverse chronological order with the burglary at the top and the attempted sexual assault at the bottom:

  1. The lad appears to need structure. Rather the lad appears to need "A" structure. 5' x 9' should be sufficient in a couple years.

  2. Here is an appropriate ending to a rapists career:

    Better than a 5' x 9' structure.

  3. Could this be a hint as to what his tattoo said?

  4. 5' X 9' in a couple of years? Sounds like he could use that structure right now. IMO.

    I agree with you.
At some point the buck stops at the door of a police car. I would guess some person will comment about the parent-parents. Some of the kids have good parents. Some do not. Some have only a foster parent. All of them are abused (emotional-sexual) or were at some point in life. No excuse. I think the DNA gets messed up and the genetics of these kids gets a short circuit. Most all of the law violations are boasted in peer circles. It is COOL to be a "homey" COOL to be in "jail" The thinking process is all part of the reward system. Few counselors approach the "PEER" mindset. These youth honestly think that prison is cool. If we have TV spots talking about prison not being COOL it may help. Rather than promoting alcohol, promote whats not cool. Target the five year olds. What are the schools doing? NOTHING. They teach six year olds how to put condoms on cucumbers. Scaring these type of kids will not work. They have developed a shell around the emotional functioning that is impenetrable. This type of youth can manipulate you into a milk shake. This is one that has acted out. Many other youth and adults do not give signals like this young person. Rather, they have a "BIG BANG"
Does this young person have knifes at home?
I want to mention that I have much information about symptoms of BPD (borderline personality disorder) up now. That's all.

  6. I ride the MoPac nearly everyday along here. I've noticed a shady character hanging out near the 48th St. bridge on the west side quite a bit lately. Can't say he's doing anything illegal, but most people don't just "hang out" on the trail. Keep your eyes and ear open!

  7. The juvenile system is a joke, he will be right back out within a few months and his arrests will pick back up- The interesting thing is that you can pretty much pinpoint when he was released from confienemt for the attempted rape, by his arrest record you displayed.

  8. My belief is that while it might be acceptable to not disclose the names of minors that commit lesser, non-violent offenses, as soon as they are charged with a violent misdemeanor or any felony, they've just shown that they want to play in the big thug leagues, so print their name big and bold.

I'd read that story from MO, but hadn't seen the news footage, thanks, Chris! He won't plea-deal that one down. I always figure that while it's good to call 911 (if you've got the time), be equipped, practiced, and able to hold down the fort until they get there.

  9. I don't understand, I've seen kids get sent to the Youth Development Center in Kearney, NE just for skipping school. Why in the heck was this kid only on "house arrest"?

I'm sure that kids being sent to the Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in Kearney are there for other crimes besides skipping school. Most of the kids in the center are from Omaha and Lincoln.

  11. Looks like he should have been dropped off at a hospital a long time ago.

  12. This is perhaps why the thug had little to fear from most law-abiding civilian victims in any city park or rec trail:

    12.08.200 Weapons Prohibited in Parks.
    (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to possess or discharge, or cause to be discharged, within any park, any firearm, including, but not limited to, any pistol, revolver, shotgun, or rifle.

  13. What does BPD have to do with these crimes? The majority of BPD sufferers are female, and females rarely rape anyone. I have BPD and I've never raped anyone, nor burgled anyone. Also, my six-year-old has not been taught how to put a condom on a cucumber at school! Let's try and stay on track here.

  14. I kind of doubt he has any clue about a city ordinance prohibiting weapons in a city park, and I doubt that would play any role in the warped way he makes his decisions. My guess is the bike path simply provides an easy way for him to get around, and I'm guessing he lives somewhere near the path. Too bad those people whose home he broke into didn't have a rather large landshark of their own to teach him a lesson.

  15. Remember, these are only the ones he was caught for. Do you really think he's been caught every time?

    "and females rarely rape anyone".

I differ. Look at all the cases in the nation that have a female perp. Most of the time it has been a teacher, so I do not see any merit to "it was a he or it was a she" mentality. Rape does not discriminate. As for the condom, it does happen. Thankfully not to your child. Condoms and not cucumbers are another reason to stay involved in the schools if you have a student. Also the very nature of a MH diagnosis is that one size will not fit all.

  17. I'm aghast that a person WATCHED the sexual assault and did not intervene or make some sort of comment. Even if this person thought it was a "joke," why not at least say something like "what's going on?" Just by saying something, the perp might have disengaged. And why this dog-walker person thought that a sexual assault, fake or real, was "joke worthy" is also just astonishing.

  18. TO: I'm aghast,

If this person "got involved" and then was killed, then what?
Even if you report a drunk driver, and drunk drivers kill FAR more people than rapes do, the police tell you NOT to follow the drunk and let them handle it.
So the point you make is more howdy dodee time then rational.

  19. We need to look out for each other. That bystander should be ashamed of himself.
