Props from NYC

The Lincoln Police Department received a little tip 'o the hat yesterday from a city council member in New York City, according to this article from the New York Times.

Mr. Williams has apparently read this description, which I wrote an eon ago. It gets picked up from time to time, and I am asked for permission to republish it a couple times a year. Although it dates from the mid 1990s, it is still valid today.

Is it true only 10-15% of what lincoln police do is crime fighting? This is what chief peschong said. Where are those numbers coming from?

Perhaps the Chief was referring to the actual amount of time that cuffs are being slapped on a suspect?

9:25,

Part 1 crime divided by total number of CFS. True in almost all cities. Disturbances, traffic crashes, traffic enforcement, mental health investigations, dispute resolution, missing persons, special services, false alarms, alcohol-related incidents (and many others), are all huge parts of the police workload--even though is the U.S. we typically focus intently on Part 1 crime, (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, auto theft, and arson) which represent a relatively small portion of the total workload handled by the police.
