Some time ago, I blogged about the problem of chronic offenders who habitually fail to appear in court. The revolving door that results is not only annoying; it costs taxpayers a small fortune. Here's a common sense move in the right direction that I found in my bulging in-basket when I returned from vacation (click to open the file):
How refreshing! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI have always liked attending court when Judge Pokorny is on the bench. He is certainly never at a loss for words and loves to chide the 'permanent fixture' type defendants mercilessly.
ReplyDeleteHear, hear Judge Pokorny!
ReplyDeleteThese frequent fliers also seem to love to commit more crimes while awaiting a docket call, motion hearing, sentencing, or trial for another case (or cases). An example of this is a career criminal that committed a violent assault on his ex-GF while he was out on a $5,000 bond (actually $500 cash alternative) and due back in court for a jury trial for 3rd-offense DUI, plus a few other charges. In fact, his trial was to start today. Look him up; he's got history that extends back far beyond this last assault.
ReplyDeleteNotice that he was charged with Strangulation (a felony, I believe) back in 2005. The charges were dismissed without prejudice, which I think allows them to be re-instated in the future if circumstances favor that. I have a hunch that the victim in both the recent beating and the 2005 strangulation case are one and the same, but that's just my hunch.
:::standing and applauding:::
ReplyDeleteBet they aren't laughing now.
ReplyDeleteI asked my Magic 8-Ball if your blog topic for tomorrow was going to be the insane proposal that the drinking age should be lowered to 18. The usual suspects dig that stupid idea up every year to pander to the new college students and get them to read the Urinal-Jar.
ReplyDeleteThe answer: "Signs point to yes"
Criminals who fail to appear for court in our fair city understand something else--that the cops are too busy to spend much (if any) time searching for them. If you want to talk about common sense approaches to the FTA problem....how about a warrants unit strictly dedicated to serving some of those gazillion warrants out there....a sent message of sorts. Judges like Pokorny can then do their thing, and maybe this out-of-control trend can be reversed.

ReplyDeleteThat issue was pretty thoroughly discussed in the comments following this post from January 21.
yes, Yes, YES!!!!
ReplyDeleteIs it an election year for this judge???? Might just be PR to get your vote
ReplyDeleteDont think so Pokorny been this way since I started and theres a reason attorney for these scumbags don't like going to him. He calls them on all their BS. I wish all were like this we wouldn't have some many problems.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the Judge has a sky rocket fetish, ya know and ah ya know, sky rocket?
