Recently, we've had a few metal thefts that have caught my eye, and I was wondering what the situation is in 2008. Had the thefts rebounded, or did it just seem that way? I ran the data for the first half of 2008, and here's how the past three years line up:
Looks like the reduction is holding. It could be that the State legislature's action last session in passing LB 766 will help keep this crime tamped down. The new laws passed in the 2008 session all became effective last Friday, unless they carried the emergency clause. We'll have to keep an eye on metal thefts for the remainder of the year, and see what happens.

ReplyDeleteWOW I wonder how many out of control teens will end up dropped off at hospitals.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's an impressive drop in damage and $.
ReplyDeleteWell, here is one way metal thieves can end their "career". Apparently, the phrase "test light" wasn't in his vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteI was holding out for a 'turn in your guns' program by the police so maybe I could score some Poision tickets but I think I'll sell my gun to the scrap yard since prices are high.

Like 8:21, I was wondering if there is an age limit to dropping unwanted children off at the hospital. I have a 17 and 12 year old I'd like to get rid of.
ReplyDeleteWith the "safe haven" law, we see a real disadvantage of a one-house legislature - it's too easy to rush through poorly-worded legislation, which they often do, just because it's a short-term popular issue with voters that have a child's attention span. Most legislators want to toss a quick bone to the people that keep ringing their phone off the hook.
ReplyDeleteWhile I think that legislative action is responsible for some of the drop, I also believe that the increased use of PEX in new construction has depressed the numbers.

ReplyDeleteDoesn't take many of those in prison to change the stats!

I suspect that's true--not to mention the general downturn in new home construction.
PEX is great stuff but they still go in and take the wiring and the water meters.
